How to fix a Wix landing page that isn't converting

Wix lets anyone build a website in an afternoon, and that speed is both its strength and its conversion liability. The easier it is to build, the easier it is to skip the hard work — the messaging, the hierarchy, the ruthless focus on one action. Here is how to take a Wix page that looks finished and make it actually perform.

The Wix challenge

Easy to build, easy to bloat

Wix's drag-and-drop editor is genuinely impressive — you can place anything anywhere, add sections with a click, and install apps from the Wix App Market in seconds. The problem is that all of that ease works against conversion. Placing anything anywhere means the visual hierarchy is whatever you happened to drag last. Adding sections with a click means the page grows long without getting more persuasive. Installing apps means pop-ups, chat widgets, and notification bars competing for the visitor's attention before they read the headline.

Wix has also carried a reputation for slow page speed, and while Wix's infrastructure has improved significantly, the pages people build on it often have not. Heavy hero images, auto-playing video backgrounds, and multiple third-party app embeds still produce pages that load slowly on mobile — which is where the majority of your traffic lands.

Failure modes

Five conversion mistakes Wix makes easy

Wix does not force these mistakes — its ease invites them. Check your page against each one.

The template hero that says everything and nothing

Wix templates ship with hero sections featuring a large background image and a headline like "Welcome to Our Site" or "The Future of [Category]." These are placeholders, but many Wix users edit them lightly instead of rewriting from scratch. The result is a hero that names a category instead of making a promise — and a visitor who cannot tell what makes you different.

Drag-and-drop hierarchy chaos

When you can place anything anywhere, nothing has a natural reading order. Headlines, images, buttons, and decorative elements end up wherever they fit visually rather than where they work cognitively. The eye should flow: headline, subhead, CTA — in that order, by size and contrast. If a decorative strip or image is louder than the button, the hierarchy is broken.

App Market clutter

The Wix App Market makes it easy to add a chat widget, a pop-up form, a social feed, a reviews carousel, and a notification bar — each one reasonable alone, together they create a page that feels noisy and slow. Each app adds weight, visual noise, and a competing action. On a landing page, fewer apps means fewer distractions.

Page speed on mobile

A Wix page with a large hero image, an auto-playing video background, multiple app embeds, and custom fonts can load slowly on a mid-range phone. The Wix Editor preview on your desktop hides this cost. Real visitors on cellular connections feel every extra second — and a headline that paints late is a headline many never read.

Multiple CTAs with no primary

Wix makes it easy to add buttons, so pages end up with several — "Contact Us," "Learn More," "Subscribe," "Book Now" — all roughly the same size and prominence. When every button is equal, no button is primary. The visitor has to decide which one matters, and deciding is effort most people skip.

The fix

A six-step conversion pass for your Wix landing page

Work message-first. Do not start rearranging elements until you know what the page should say.

1. Rewrite the hero headline from zero

Do not edit the template text — delete it and write a new headline that answers: what is this, who is it for, and why is it better than the alternative? If your headline would work for a competitor, it is not specific enough. This single change has more conversion impact than anything else on the page.

2. Establish a clear visual hierarchy

The headline should be the largest text on the screen. The CTA button should be the highest-contrast element. Everything else — images, decorative elements, secondary text — should be visually quieter. In Wix's editor, this means deliberately sizing and coloring elements by importance, not by what looks balanced.

3. Choose one primary CTA and demote the rest

Pick the one action that matters most. Make that button large, high-contrast, and labeled with the outcome. Every other button should be visually secondary — smaller, outlined, or text-only. If you cannot pick one action, the page is trying to do too many jobs.

4. Remove apps the landing page does not need

Go through your installed Wix apps and disable or hide any that are not directly serving the landing page's single goal. Chat widgets, social feeds, notification bars, and pop-ups compete for attention and add load time. Keep only what earns its place in conversions.

5. Cut the page length

Delete sections that do not move the visitor toward the action. A team section, a generic features grid, and a blog feed do not belong on a landing page. Aim for the minimum number of sections needed to make the promise, prove it, handle the main objection, and ask for the action.

6. Test on a real phone and measure load time

Open the published page — not the Wix Editor preview — on a mid-range phone over cellular data. Time how long it takes for the headline and CTA to be visible. If it takes more than a few seconds, reduce image sizes, remove auto-playing video, and disable apps until the page loads fast enough for real visitors.

Before you launch

Wix landing page conversion checklist

Run this before you drive any traffic to your Wix page.

Message & hierarchy

  • The hero headline is written from scratch, not edited from a template
  • The headline is the largest text element on the page
  • One CTA button is the highest-contrast element above the fold
  • Secondary buttons are visually demoted (smaller, outlined, or text-only)
  • Every section on the page moves the visitor toward the action

Speed & clutter

  • Wix apps that do not serve the landing page are hidden or removed
  • Hero image is compressed and sized for the display width
  • Auto-playing video backgrounds are removed or justified
  • The page loads in under three seconds on a real mid-range phone
  • Pop-ups and notification bars are disabled on the landing page

The one rule for Wix landing pages

Wix makes building fast, but converting is a different skill than building. The same ease that lets you create a page in an afternoon also lets you skip the hard work: writing a specific headline, choosing one action, establishing a hierarchy, and cutting everything that does not earn its place. Do that hard work, and Wix is a perfectly capable conversion platform. Skip it, and you have a page that looks finished but performs like a first draft.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered

Is Wix bad for conversion rates?

Wix the platform is not the problem — the pages people build on it are. Wix's drag-and-drop freedom makes it easy to create cluttered layouts, install too many apps, and leave template placeholder copy in place. A Wix landing page with a clear headline, one dominant CTA, minimal clutter, and fast load time can convert as well as any platform. The discipline is on you, not the tool.

Are Wix sites too slow for landing pages?

Wix's infrastructure has improved significantly, but the pages people build on it are often heavy. Auto-playing video backgrounds, large uncompressed images, and multiple Wix App Market embeds compound to create slow mobile loads. The fix is on the page, not the platform: compress images, cut video backgrounds, remove apps the landing page doesn't need, and test on a real phone.

How do I make my Wix landing page faster?

Start with the biggest offenders: replace or compress the hero image (serve it at the display size, not the original resolution), remove auto-playing video backgrounds, disable Wix apps the landing page does not use, and limit custom fonts. Then test on a real mid-range phone over cellular data — the Wix Editor preview on your desktop does not show the real performance.

Should I use Wix or another platform for my landing page?

If you are already on Wix and your landing page needs are straightforward, stay — the platform is capable enough. If you need deep CRO control (A/B testing, custom code, conditional elements), you may outgrow Wix. But for most small businesses, the platform is not the bottleneck — the message, hierarchy, and focus of the page are. Fix those before considering a switch.

Can I remove the Wix header on a landing page?

Wix allows you to hide the header and footer on specific pages through the page settings in the Editor. For landing pages receiving paid traffic, hiding the navigation is a standard CRO practice — every nav link is an exit that competes with the action you want the visitor to take. Use Wix's built-in page-level header toggle rather than trying to hide it with custom code.
