72/100
Score

A marketplace giant with unmatched inventory depth, still carrying the UX residue of its auction past into a world that now expects Amazon-grade buying confidence.

See methodology →
Highest-impact issue

eBay has largely transitioned to fixed-price Buy It Now listings, but the page still carries auction-era design language (bidding UI, price ranges, "or Best Offer") that makes buying feel uncertain. The perception of complexity costs more conversions than actual complexity.

Real founders, real fixes
I honestly expected another generic website audit, but Landing Doctors gave us clear explanations and actionable fixes. After updating the hero section and improving the offer clarity, inquiries started increasing within days.

The audit was useful overall and gave us a few good ideas for improving clarity on the homepage. Some suggestions felt a bit generic, but the CTA and headline recommendations definitely helped.

What this page does well

3 strengths
Money Back Guarantee is comprehensive and well-known, providing genuine buyer confidence.
Inventory depth in collectibles, refurbished electronics, and parts is unmatched by any competitor.
Seller rating system with decades of transaction history provides trust at scale.

Findings (3)

Was → problem → fix → why

Each finding cites the live copy at audit time, names the conversion problem, proposes a specific rewrite, and explains why the rewrite works against the 12-dimension framework.

Finding #01clarityHigh-impact
Was
(multi-format listings — auction/BIN/offer mixed in search results)
Problem

Mixing auction listings, Buy It Now, and "Make an Offer" in the same search results creates cognitive load that Amazon and Walmart.com avoid entirely. A buyer looking for a specific product has to interpret three different purchasing mechanisms on one page.

Fix
Default search results to Buy It Now with fixed pricing. Surface auctions and offers as optional filters for buyers who want them, not as noise for those who don't.
Why this works

Reducing purchase-mechanism ambiguity in default results makes eBay feel as simple as Amazon for the 85% of transactions that are already fixed-price.

Finding #02trustHigh-impact
Was
(seller-dependent experience with inconsistent listing quality)
Problem

Listing quality varies wildly between professional sellers and individual listers. Inconsistent photo quality, description depth, and shipping terms across a single search result page erodes the platform-level trust that eBay's guarantee provides.

Fix
Introduce a "Top Standard" visual tier for listings meeting quality criteria (pro photos, same-day shipping, full description) and promote these in default sort.
Why this works

Visually tiering listing quality lets eBay's best sellers represent the platform experience for new buyers, while keeping the long-tail inventory accessible for those who seek it.

Finding #03objectionsMedium
Was
(shipping cost and timeline unclear until deep in the listing)
Problem

Free shipping and delivery estimates are available but inconsistently surfaced in search results. When a buyer has to click into each listing to determine shipping cost, comparison shopping becomes tedious enough to drive them to a platform with guaranteed free 2-day delivery.

Fix
Show delivery date and total price (item + shipping) on every search result card. Highlight "Free shipping, arrives by [date]" in the same visual weight as the price.
Why this works

Total cost transparency at the search level prevents sticker-shock deep in the funnel and stops buyers from defaulting to Amazon where they know shipping is included.
