Gusto

Independent fintech landing-page teardown using our public 12-dimension framework. Apply the findings to your own page in under 30 minutes.

IndependentNot affiliated·Public methodology
75/100
Score

Clean SMB payroll positioning with genuine warmth. The page speaks to small business owners, not HR departments -- a smart audience choice. Weak on proof and urgency.

Highest-impact issue

The hero conveys friendliness but avoids specifics. Small business owners comparing Gusto to ADP Run or Paychex Flex need concrete numbers (setup time, per-employee cost, error rate) to justify switching.

What this page does well

4 strengths
Audience is immediately clear: small businesses, not enterprise HR.
Friendly, human tone differentiates from the corporate voice of ADP/Paychex.
Benefits and health insurance upsell is well-integrated without cluttering the payroll message.
Free trial or demo visible from the hero -- low-friction entry.

Findings (3)

Was → problem → fix → why

Each finding cites the live copy at audit time, names the conversion problem, proposes a specific rewrite, and explains why the rewrite works against the 12-dimension framework.

Finding #01proofHigh-impact
Was
(unknown current hero -- generic fintech pattern)
Problem

The page claims ease and simplicity but provides no measurable evidence. "Easy payroll" is what every payroll company says. Without a metric (setup time, error rate, hours saved), the claim is indistinguishable from ADP Run.

Fix
"Run payroll for your whole team in under 10 minutes -- 300,000+ small businesses already do."
Why this works

Names the time (10 minutes), the scope (whole team), and the social proof (300,000+ businesses). Each element is falsifiable, which makes the claim credible.

Finding #02objectionsMedium
Was
(tax filing guarantee not visible in the hero section)
Problem

The #1 fear for small business owners doing payroll is filing taxes wrong and getting penalized. Gusto handles tax filing automatically, but this guarantee is buried below the fold. This is a conversion-critical trust signal.

Fix
Add beneath hero: "Gusto files your federal, state, and local payroll taxes automatically. If we make an error, we fix it and pay the penalty."
Why this works

Directly addresses the #1 objection with a concrete guarantee. The penalty-coverage promise converts fence-sitters who are currently doing payroll manually out of tax-filing fear.

Finding #03offer specificityMedium
Was
(pricing not visible from the hero viewport)
Problem

Small business owners are price-sensitive and comparison-shop aggressively. Hiding pricing until a separate page creates unnecessary friction and invites tab-closing. ADP and Paychex hide pricing -- Gusto can differentiate by being transparent.

Fix
Add a pricing anchor in the hero: "Starts at $40/mo + $6/person. See full pricing."
Why this works

Anchors expectations immediately. The per-person model is Gusto's strength against flat-rate competitors. Showing it early frames the comparison favorably.
