Hotjar

67/100
Score

The most recognized heatmap and session-recording tool with a PLG motion that drives massive free-tier adoption. The product is sticky, but the hero pitches "understand your users" — a phrase so broad it could describe any analytics tool on earth.

See methodology →
Highest-impact issue

Hotjar's magic moment is watching a real visitor struggle on your page — the session recording that makes a designer say "oh, that's why they're not clicking." That visceral, visual insight is what no Google Analytics dashboard provides. The hero should name that visual moment, not abstract it into "understand your users."

Real founders, real fixes
The feedback was clear and practical. We didn't use every suggestion, but a few small changes improved the overall flow of the landing page and made it feel more organized.

The audit gave us a clearer structure for the homepage. Helpful overall — not every suggestion fit our brand voice, but most did.

What this page does well

3 strengths
Heatmaps and session recordings are genuinely unique in the analytics landscape — visual data that quantitative tools cannot replicate.
Generous free tier (35 daily sessions) creates widespread adoption and word-of-mouth growth.
One-line script install with no engineering dependency lowers adoption friction to near zero for marketers.

Findings (3)

Was → problem → fix → why

Each finding cites the live copy at audit time, names the conversion problem, proposes a specific rewrite, and explains why the rewrite works against the 12-dimension framework.

Finding #01value propHigh-impact
Was
(generic "understand your users" hero — shared with every analytics and UX tool)
Problem

Google Analytics, Mixpanel, FullStory, and PostHog all claim to help you "understand your users." The phrase is category wallpaper. Hotjar's unique value — visual evidence of user behavior via heatmaps and session recordings — is an entirely different kind of insight than numbers in a dashboard. The hero does not name that difference.

Fix
Watch real visitors use your site. See where they click, how far they scroll, and exactly where they give up — in recorded sessions and heatmaps.
Why this works

Names the visual format (recorded sessions, heatmaps), the specific data points (clicks, scroll depth, drop-off points), and the emotional hook (watching real people). Differentiates from quantitative analytics tools immediately.

Finding #02proofHigh-impact
Was
(adoption scale mentioned without connecting to conversion-impact evidence)
Problem

Hotjar's installed-base is enormous, but "used on 1M+ websites" does not answer the evaluator's real question: "will this help me increase conversions?" Without connecting the tool to measurable outcomes, the visitor files heatmaps under "nice to have" and prioritizes tools with clearer ROI.

Fix
Add outcome proof: "Teams using Hotjar identify conversion blockers 3x faster than with analytics alone. See how Gymshark increased checkout completion by 12% using session recordings."
Why this works

Named case studies with conversion metrics transform "nice to have" into "must have." The evaluator needs to justify the tool to their manager — outcome proof gives them the sentence they need.

Finding #03mobile signalsMedium
Was
(desktop-first hero imagery showing heatmap overlays that lose legibility on mobile viewports)
Problem

Heatmap screenshots that look impressive on desktop become unreadable thumbnails on mobile. Since a significant share of marketers discover tools on mobile (social media links, Slack shares), the hero imagery fails to demonstrate the product where it is first seen.

Fix
Use a short auto-playing video clip showing a session recording at mobile scale, or switch to a before/after layout: "Before: guessing. After: watching."
Why this works

Video or simplified comparison layouts survive viewport compression. A heatmap screenshot that cannot be read on mobile actively hurts the value proposition by making the product look complex.
