Score

The world's largest C2C marketplace with unmatched product variety and a deeply gamified shopping experience. For Western buyers, the language barrier and domestic-only logistics make it a treasure chest behind a locked door.

Highest-impact issue

Taobao has product variety that Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress cannot match — niche items, custom fabrication shops, and micro-batch production at consumer prices. That "find literally anything" positioning is the hook for international buyers, but the site offers no international shipping infrastructure, no English discovery layer, and no trust calibration for cross-border transactions.

Real founders, real fixes
The audit helped simplify our homepage. Customers seem to understand the product faster now, and we're seeing fewer drop-offs on the product pages.

What this page does well

3 strengths
Product depth and variety are genuinely unmatched — virtually any consumer good exists on the platform.
Buyer-protection system (Alipay escrow) is mature and well-enforced within China.
Visual search and recommendation algorithms surface relevant products with minimal keyword effort.

Findings (3)

Was → problem → fix → why

Each finding cites the live copy at audit time, names the conversion problem, proposes a specific rewrite, and explains why the rewrite works against the 12-dimension framework.

Finding #01clarityCritical
Was
(Mandarin-only consumer marketplace with discovery optimized for domestic shoppers)
Problem

A Western buyer arrives at a fully Chinese interface designed for domestic consumers. There is no international buyer path, no language toggle, and no explanation of how to purchase and ship to a non-Chinese address. The site is functionally inaccessible to its largest untapped audience.

Fix
Create an international gateway: "Shop Taobao worldwide. Millions of products at China-direct prices. We'll handle translation, payment, and shipping to your door — starting at $5 consolidation."
Why this works

An English-language entry page with integrated forwarding-agent partnerships captures the enormous demand from Western buyers who currently use third-party Taobao agents, paying markup for a service the platform could own directly.

Finding #02trustHigh-impact
Was
(seller ratings and review systems calibrated for Chinese consumer norms)
Problem

Taobao's review system is robust within China but unreadable to international buyers — reviews are in Chinese, rating conventions differ, and there is no fraud-signal translation for cross-border trust assessment. A Western buyer cannot distinguish a reliable seller from a problematic one.

Fix
Surface translated trust signals for international views: "This seller: 4.8 rating from 12,000+ orders. 98% positive reviews. Ships via international forwarding. Average cross-border delivery: 10-14 days."
Why this works

Trust translation — converting domestic reputation metrics into internationally legible signals — is the minimum viable step to make Taobao's existing review infrastructure useful for cross-border buyers.

Finding #03offer specificityMedium
Was
(pricing displayed in CNY with no conversion, duty estimation, or landed-cost preview)
Problem

Prices in Chinese yuan without real-time conversion, estimated duties, or total landed cost force the international buyer to perform mental arithmetic and risk assessment on every item. The cognitive load of "how much does this actually cost me delivered" is a consistent bounce trigger.

Fix
Show landed-cost estimates: "Item: $12.40 | Shipping to US: ~$4.80 | Est. duty: $0 (under $800 threshold) | Total landed: ~$17.20. Prices update in real time."
Why this works

Landed-cost transparency removes the single biggest friction point for cross-border shoppers: the fear that a cheap item becomes expensive after shipping and duties erase the savings.
