66/100
Score

The dominant US real-estate portal with unmatched listing coverage. The homepage is functionally a search box — effective for repeat visitors, but it does zero value-framing for a first-time home buyer making the most expensive purchase of their life.

See methodology →
Highest-impact issue

Buying a home is a high-anxiety, high-stakes transaction. Zillow's homepage treats it like searching for a restaurant — type an address, see results. There is no trust framing, no guidance for first-time buyers, and no reason to choose Zillow over Redfin or Realtor.com beyond habit. The emotional weight of the purchase is completely unaddressed.

Real founders, real fixes
We had traffic but almost no conversions from mobile users. Landing Doctors showed us exactly where people were losing interest and how to fix it. The recommendations were practical, fast to implement, and made the site feel much more…

Useful feedback overall. We changed a few sections and bounce rate improved slightly. Not earth-shattering but worth the price for the structured perspective.

What this page does well

3 strengths
Zestimate is a genuinely unique data asset — instant home-value estimates that no competitor replicates at scale.
Listing coverage is near-complete for the US market — visitors trust they're seeing everything available.
Mobile app experience is polished with map-based search, saved homes, and push alerts for price drops.

Findings (3)

Was → problem → fix → why

Each finding cites the live copy at audit time, names the conversion problem, proposes a specific rewrite, and explains why the rewrite works against the 12-dimension framework.

Finding #01value propHigh-impact
Was
(search-box-only hero — no value framing for why Zillow over competitors)
Problem

A search box is a utility, not a value proposition. Every real-estate portal has a search box. Zillow's differentiator — Zestimate data, largest listing database, touring tools — is invisible in the first viewport. A visitor comparing Zillow to Redfin sees identical heroes and defaults to whichever they heard about most recently.

Fix
Add a value line above the search: "Every listing. Instant home values. Tour any home on your schedule. Search the largest real estate marketplace in the US."
Why this works

Names the three differentiators (completeness, Zestimate, touring) and the scale claim (largest) in one line. The search box remains the primary action, but now the visitor knows why they're searching here instead of elsewhere.

Finding #02trustHigh-impact
Was
(no trust framing for a transaction that averages $400K+ in the US)
Problem

A home purchase is the largest financial decision most people make. The homepage treats it with the same emotional weight as a product-search page. No guidance, no reassurance, no "we help you through this" framing. First-time buyers feel unsupported; repeat buyers don't need Zillow's help and use agents directly.

Fix
Add a first-time buyer entry point: "First home? We'll walk you through it — from pre-approval to closing."
Why this works

First-time buyers are Zillow's highest-value acquisition target (they return for years and generate agent-referral revenue). A dedicated entry point converts the anxious browser into a guided funnel.

Finding #03social proofMedium
Was
(no aggregate usage stats or listing-count proof visible on the homepage)
Problem

Zillow's scale is its moat — more listings than any competitor. But the homepage doesn't state this. A visitor has no way to know whether Zillow shows 10% or 99% of available homes without a coverage claim.

Fix
Add: "200M+ homes in our database. 36M+ unique visitors monthly. The most-visited real estate site in the US."
Why this works

Scale metrics in real estate translate directly to trust: more listings = less chance of missing your dream home. The coverage claim is the single strongest argument for choosing Zillow over a smaller portal.
